Zune firmware is the software that is actually on the Zune device. Periodically, updated versions of firmware are available for free download. If you need to reinstall the firmware to your Zune, you can do so with the Zune software for your computer.
Well, now the new Zunes are out, and it’s time to dig deep into them again. I’ll once again spend a good deal of time with them before publishing a full review, but some of the changes here are startling enough that I just wanted to share some first impressions. So far, I have spent a few days with the new Zune desktop software, my old white Zune (now dubbed the Zune 30) with the new firmware applied, and a black Zune 8 (the 8GB flash model). The new flash Zune 8 comes in a slick case that retains the brown look with the pink/red edge on the bottom, and a slide-up top. The whole out-of-box experience is very slick, and definitely conjures up images of opening any of Apple’s latest products. There’s no room for a CD in here—the instructions tell you to head to to download and install the software first. After installation, the Zune 8 flash player was detected, drivers were installed, and it informed me that I’d need to update the firmware to version 2.1 The same goes for hooking up my old Zune 30.
It takes just a few minutes to update the firmware, and you’re in business. I gotta say, it’s really good of Microsoft to update all existing 30GB Zunes to new firmware that gives them all the same features as the new models. You don’t have the touch-pad, of course, but the interface and capabilities are all there. Continued. 1 of 3.
